Thousands of youngsters and adults have enjoyed a summer of fun and fitness thanks to the Active Coast programme.
Dozens of free events in and around Bridlington and along the Yorkshire Coast have seen participants take up sports such as volleyball, running, walking, cycling and cricket along with creative beach stone art sessions, coastal exploration days and the hugely popular beach yoga sessions.
Dozens of youngsters took part in a beach sport day at Southshore in Bridlington, enjoying rounders, sky ball, and fun beach activities.
One parent, whose children were taking part said: “It’s fantastic. The kids have really enjoyed the events and the beach sports organisers were fantastic.”
Due to the pandemic, then popular summer programme was cancelled last year, but this year many of the events saw a record turnout, particularly for the ‘Landmark Yoga’ sessions which was hugely poplar with adults.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council facilitated and organised the events, and a spokesperson said:
“We are delighted with the popularity and success of our Active Coast programme this summer, and it has been wonderful to have it back again this year.”
They added: ”After summer, Active Coast will continue to work on health initiatives, using our coastal open spaces to provide wellbeing opportunities such as beach yoga and mindfulness. The programme will also be looking at the relaunch of the ‘Cover The Coast’ walks, and extending other popular activities outside holiday periods, working with volunteers to establish drop in beach clean hubs and working with partners to support community activity throughout the year for residents.”
