Bridlington Old Town Gallery & Information Point will be hosting another monthly Guest Artist throughout September, though this month the artist is perhaps better known for his voluntary and regeneration work across the town.
Martyn Coltman, who has also run the gallery as manager curator since 2014, has been promising to display a selection of his own pieces, for several years – and finally he’s got round to bringing together a retrospective collection, which starts from 1978, when he had just finished GCE and O Levels at Headlands School, right through to four brand new pieces, created in 2026 which as yet have not been seen by anyone.
The retrospective expo covers college work whilst gaining his National Diploma Distinction in Art & Design, from the early 1980s, through to a selection of oils; watercolour and ink; pencil and gouache pieces created in the 1990s and beyond. Martyn’s favourite medium remains watercolour, as he was taught by locally-renowned teacher and watercolourist Les Pearson. “Les was an inspiration, and the techniques he taught us at school, have stayed with me for life. He was a great teacher and incredibly skilled artist.”
The exhibition runs from September 1st to 30th at The Old Town Gallery. If you want to meet and chat with Martyn at the gallery, he is holding a special ‘Meet the Artist’ Preview on Saturday 5th September, from 1-4pm, with complimentary fizz and nibbles. Everyone is welcome.
