A Bridlington filmmaker is celebrating international success after his independent comedy feature film picked up a major award on the global festival circuit.
“Gallimaufry”, a feature-length sketch comedy written and directed by Bridlington actor and filmmaker Leon Cole, has won Best International Feature Film at the Golden Lion International Film Festival.
The production was filmed across Bridlington, Scarborough and Sewerby, showcasing the Yorkshire coast on screen while bringing together a cast and crew drawn from across East and North Yorkshire.
For Leon, who was born and raised in Bridlington, the award marks another milestone in a growing career spanning film, television, theatre and comedy.
The 62-minute comedy, which features a series of humorous sketches inspired by classic shows such as Little Britain, Monty Python, The Catherine Tate Show and Horrible Histories, was released in December 2025 and continues to attract attention on the national and international film festival circuit.
Leon, who directed and wrote the project, is no stranger to television audiences. He has appeared in productions including Netflix’s Bodies, Channel 4’s Hullraisers, CBBC’s Jamie Johnson FC and Sky Cinema’s The Radleys. More recently he has taken roles in major period dramas including Netflix’s Gandhi and Channel 4’s A Woman of Substance.
Despite his growing profile, Leon remains passionate about promoting Bridlington and the Yorkshire coast through his work.
The film features performances from actors based in East and North Yorkshire and was professionally produced with all cast and crew employed under contract.
Speaking about the project, Leon said he wanted to bring sketch comedy back to the forefront and create a fast-paced film that would
appeal to modern audiences.
The award-winning film is available to watch online, alongside a behind-the-scenes documentary, deleted scenes and a soundtrack release.
The success of “Gallimaufry” places Bridlington firmly in the spotlight and highlights the growing creative talent emerging from the Yorkshire coast, with Leon Cole continuing to champion his hometown through film and entertainment.
