Sporting life has gone full circle for
Bridlington golfer Alex Belt.
Eighteen years after completing his
PGA qualifications at Bridlington Links and heading off for a 15-year professional career, the 38-year-old is back where it all began.
Belt, who played in the European Tour’s flagship event at Wentworth and
competed in full schedules on the PGA Tour of China, has taken over the running and full renovation of the
Links course’s floodlit 20- bay range.
“We are three weeks into renovations and have drastically changed the look, adding extra facilities, activities and speciality nights for all the family to
enjoy,” said Belt.
“I’ll be also using my 15 years of knowledge of working with some of the
best coaches in golf to help coach students wanting to improve their game.”
That coaching helped Belt to more than 100 professional wins on some of the world’s most famous courses and he is keen to encourage more people to enjoy the game’s delights.
“With the nearest full- sized driving range more than 35 miles away, the
Links will be a place where we can help regrow the game for all levels of golfer, no matter what their age,”
he said.
Belt’s innovative ideas include the introduction of ‘disc golf’ where players throw frisbees into a cage,
to help increase the family
friendliness element to the course.
To mark the completion of the refurbished driving range, the Links will be hosting its first professional
tournament for more than 10 years when the cream of the county’s players will take to the course for a PGA Yorkshire event on August 11.
“Everyone is welcome to come and watch Yorkshire’s finest golfers in action, free of charge,” added Belt.
“As a special opening offer, we will be giving away a free, small bucket
of balls to children from 9am-noon so they can experience our new range
facility.”
