The first puffin of the year has been spotted at Bempton from one of the viewing points, heralding the start of the season where thousands of the birds descend on the white chalk cliffs of Bempton, Buckton and the Flamborough Headland.
An birdwatcher on RSPB Bempton Cliffs spotted the first puffin to make landfall this morning (25 February, 2024).
Adult puffins usually make the journey back to the East Yorkshire cliffs from early- March and into April and stay over the spring and into the summer months.
The puffin, with its beautifully coloured beak and orange feet, is one of the most popular birds to spot at Bempton and is a favourite with youngsters and adults alike.
They leave again in mid-August and some remain in the waters of the North Sea over winter – others move further south to the Bay of Biscay.
