A mini tornado, more commonly referred to as a ‘dust devil’ has been recorded over a farmers’ field at just off Scarborough Road near Bridlington.
Sue Shipley was with her husband Ian when she spotted the rare phenomenon in one of their fields – just minutes before they were about to start baling the straw from their recent harvest.

Sue said: “It’s a shame I didn’t get a video of the first one, it was a lot bigger than the second dust devil that I recorded.”
Fortunately no damage was caused though a lot of loose straw was deposited on the nearby roads.
Dust devils are described as “an upward spiralling, dust filled vortex of air.”

Varying in height from a few feet to over 1,000ft, they usually occur in desert areas or in places with a high surface temperature where the ground is dry.
They mainly occur in desert and semi-arid areas, where the ground is dry and high surface temperatures produce strong updrafts.
Although they resemble tornadoes, dust devils are not as powerful, but as they travel across the ground they can also carry other loose debris such as hay.
