Residents in Bridlington have raised concerns over ongoing roadworks which they say have seen little or no activity for several days, leaving locals facing diether disruption, congestion and safety issues.
One resident, who asked not to be named, said the situation had become “daily misery” due to the volume of traffic, impatient drivers, constant sounding of horns and even verbal abuse.
They said: “We’re just sick of the upheaval. The works should have been finished days ago and there’s been very little activity from the workmen. It feels like nothing is happening, but we’re still dealing with all the problems.”
Residents claim Watsons Avenue has become a major hotspot, with several cars reportedly having wing mirrors knocked off as vehicles attempt to pass through narrow sections of road. Heavy congestion has also led to frequent horn-blowing and delays throughout the day.
The route was initially being used by HGVs until restriction signs were placed at either end. Locals also say large potholes have begun appearing along Watsons Avenue, Harewood Avenue and parts of Sewerby Road as a result of diverted traffic.
The works are being carried out on behalf of Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, which is replacing ageing metal gas pipes with new, more durable plastic ones as part of an essential safety upgrade.
Marton Road was closed from Monday 5 January between the junctions of Watsons Avenue and Marton Avenue, with a fully signed diversion put in place for motorists. The project was planned in collaboration with East Riding of Yorkshire Council and was expected to last until early February.
A road closure notice states that the works will run from 5 January 2026 until 13 February 2026 to allow gas mains reinforcement to be completed safely. It adds that the project is anticipated to take around 40 days.
However, residents say the lack of visible progress has added to frustration and are calling for clearer communication and faster completion of the works.
