Road improvements worth £3.5 million are set to get underway across Bridlington and the East Riding this spring and summer, in a major effort to tackle potholes and extend the life of the region’s highways.
ERYC began its annual surface dressing programme in late April, with work expected to take around 16 weeks. The scheme will upgrade 166 sections of road—equivalent to 68 miles—using around 700,000 square metres of stone chippings.
Surface dressing is a key part of the council’s maintenance strategy, involving a layer of hot bitumen followed by stone chippings, which are rolled into place. The process seals the road surface, preventing water damage and significantly reducing the risk of potholes, while also improving skid resistance.
Motorists are being advised that temporary 20mph speed limits will be introduced on treated roads to ensure safety and allow the new surface to settle. Residents will receive advance notice of works, and disruption is expected to be kept to a minimum.
The council will also recycle more than 7,000 tonnes of loose chippings, saving an estimated £60,000 of taxpayers’ money.
