Residents of Bridlington facing difficulties in reaching medical appointments due to transportation issues may soon benefit from a newly launched community car scheme. In an effort to help, local organisations have got together to create an initiative that offers door-to-door transport services for those who struggle with public transport access. The HART Community Transport group and Beverley Community Lift are partnering to provide essential transport solutions to the community.
Said Jane Evison from HART: “Currently, the organisers are appealing for volunteer drivers to join this vital scheme. Volunteers will use their own vehicles and will be provided with support, guidance, and mileage reimbursement. This initiative presents a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community, forge new connections, and ensure that no resident is unable to attend crucial medical appointments due to transport challenges.
“Many residents in Bridlington are missing vital hospital appointments because they lack transportation. Could you help us make a difference?”
Bridlington Echo columnist Martin Wallace, 76, is paralysed from the waist down and has various health issues requiring frequent hospital visits.
Currently Martin says he has five appointments scheduled across different departments.
“Getting up in the morning alone takes me an hour,” he explained.
Once transport arrives, it takes him at least 15 minutes to get into the vehicle due to his condition. Mr Wallace often experiences delays of up to two hours for regular patient transport, which has caused him to be late for appointments on two occasions.
He believes that a community car scheme would significantly improve his quality of life, alleviating the anxiety of potential mishaps the night before his appointments.
