A newly-formed veterans group has been launched in Bridlington after the demise of Alderson House, which was used a meeting place for town veterans and visiting comrades.

MASH (Military Assistance & Social Hub) will meet every Tuesday, starting from 6th July at the new Bridlington Community Hub, which is located at 2a Marshall Avenue in the town centre.

The group is open to all veterans, serving military personnel and their families and replaces the Poppy Club, which was run from Alderson House to help veterans and their families.

Veteran Martin Barmby, who was instrumental in setting up the new club, said: “About 3 years ago I became involved with the new community hub hoping to be built above the town council offices. It was going to be a drop in centre where veterans could get guidance on where to seek help and what help is available, alongside the Community Cop Shop. With the unexpected loss of Alderson House and the failure of the Royal British Legion’s promise to keep the Poppy Club going, the East Riding of Yorkshire Council have very kindly stepped up to the mark and replace the vital place that veterans need, a safe place to talk and not be judged for their actions when serving in the Armed Forces.”

Martin added: “MASH will provide a much needed group for veterans, serving personnel and their families, whether they live in Bridlington or are visiting. This is a vital service being provided by our local council for the armed forces community, which we are very grateful for and proud that our council do such a great job for us.”

Fiona Turner, from the East Riding Voluntary Action Services (ERVAS), said:“ERVAS are very excited to be able to work in partnership with the ERYC and the veterans to provide valuable support and a place to meet up with other veterans and their families.”
