It has rapidly become one of the ‘go to’ attractions in Bridlington…less than a month after being officially unveiled.

The stunning Barrow Boy statue, which is located on the concourse of Bridlington Railway station, is attracting so many visitors it has become one of the top ten visitor ‘must sees’ in the town.
Thousands of visitors have already seen the impressive sculpture, many having photographs taken and shared worldwide.

One couple posted on social media saying that they had travelled by train from Sheffield just to see the statue, spent a couple of hours in town, and headed back – impressed by what they saw.
Stephen Cavill, who has created wonderful local sculptures such as the iconic Gansey Girl on Bridlington harbour and the Carnaby War Memorial was commissioned to create a life sized model of a Bridlington Barrow Boy.

It was once common sight along platforms between the 1950s and the mid- 1980s to see young boys and girls waiting outside the station to transport passengers’ luggage from the platforms to the resort hotels and guesthouses for a small fee.
From initial concept to the statue being unveiled took around 18 months and hundreds of spectators gathered to watch the official unveiling on July 25th.

Said Stephen: “The barrows – like their owners – came with wonderful variety of inventiveness – pram wheels supporting rough wooden frames. Names such as ’Swanland Flyer’ were painted on the sides.”
