The Poppy Express has returned to railway stations and trains across the region, with a dedicated team of volunteers helping raise funds for the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal.
Led by Denis Scaife, his wife Barbara and Martin Jolly, the team of around 20 volunteers is selling poppies to passengers travelling on services operated by Northern, LNER and Hull Trains.
The initiative will continue throughout the Poppy Appeal period until Saturday, November 7, giving passengers the opportunity to purchase a poppy and show their support for the Armed Forces community.
Volunteers will take to the trains throughout the appeal, helping to raise vital funds for the Royal British Legion and its work supporting serving and former members of the Armed Forces, veterans and their families.
The Poppy Express has become a familiar sight for many passengers, bringing the annual appeal directly to those travelling by rail and helping ensure the significance of remembrance remains firmly in the public eye.
The fundraising effort comes ahead of Remembrance Sunday on November 8, when communities across the country will gather to honour those who have served and sacrificed their lives in conflicts.
Armistice Day follows on Wednesday, November 11, marking the anniversary of the armistice that brought an end to fighting on the Western Front during the First World War in 1918.
