A retired college lecturer who has sailed tens of thousands of miles over the oceans of the world, has written a book about his exploits on and in the high seas.
Arthur Godfrey, 79, from Carnaby was an engineering lecturer at the former East Yorkshire College (now East Riding College) and ran classes in navigation, seamanship, practical boat handling to adults as well as older school students.
By coincidence, Arthur was also educated at St George’s School which was converted into the Bridlington college campus when the new Headlands School opened.
His latest book, entitled ‘Under and Over the Waves’, tells the story of Arthur’s love of the sea and his desire to sail the oceans of the world.
Despite sailing thousands of miles, Arthur didn’t fully complete his circumnavigation and he tells his often witty and sometimes poignant story of his family life, growing up in the area, marriage to his wife Sue, working as a deep sea diver and teaching as well as his boating and deep sea diving adventures.
“I started to look into my family history and realised that I knew nothing about my grandparents, and would love to have known about their lives and those of earlier times.” explained Arthur.
“I decided to make sure that my heirs would not have the same problem, and would know exactly who I was.
“It began as a typescript only, but close friends said that I should turn it into a proper book as it would interest others. I had the minimum number printed – 250 copies – as it was not, and is not, a commercial enterprise but a labour of love for family and friends.”
Arthur, who has been married to Sue for 55 years and has one daughter – Alison, now lives in a railway cottage at the former Carnaby station where his father worked from 1943 until he retired.
After writing a total of seven books on subjects ranging from Yorkshire Pleasure Steamers, Fishing Fleets, Shipwrecks and deep sea diving, Arthur thinks this will be his last book.
He sold his boat two years ago as his health started to deteriorate, but still has a keen interest sailing, diving and everything nautical.
