Easter weekend kicks off with rescue at Flamborough Head
A multi-agency rescue unfolded yesterday (2 April) just before the Easter weekend, after two people became cut off by the rapidly rising tide at Flamborough Head.
Bridlington and Filey Coastguard Rescue Teams were tasked alongside the Flamborough RNLI lifeboat following reports that two individuals were stranded and unable to make their own way to safety as the sea closed in around them.
The lifeboat crew quickly located the casualties, but challenging inshore conditions and the strength of the incoming tide made it impossible to reach them safely by boat. A rescue swimmer from Bridlington Coastguard entered the water to assess the situation, but with chest-deep water and powerful tidal movement, it was deemed too dangerous to attempt a return with the casualties.
With options running out and the tide continuing to rise, the decision was made to call in a Coastguard Rescue Helicopter. Arriving on scene, the aircraft carried out a precise winch operation, successfully lifting both casualties to safety and transferring them to the clifftop, where Coastguard teams were waiting.
This incident is a stark reminder of how quickly situations can change along our coastline, especially over busy holiday periods like Easter. What begins as a simple walk can rapidly turn into a life-threatening situation.
