A Bridlington historian is appealing to find more information about a former Bridlington man who lived in the area over fifty years ago.

Richard Jones, who is the author of over twenty books is running an appeal at the moment to find out more information on a man named William Becker who was a hero of the 1917 explosion in Halifax, Canada, and who lived in the East Riding area.
Said Richard: “I have a location of Bridlington (at the time of his awarding of the Albert Medal) and Driffield when he died in 1970.

“What I would like is for anybody who is related to Mr Becker to get in touch so that I can write about him in a book and if possible put up a blue plaque to honour this man who risked his life when he was in the Royal Navy in an attempt to stop the eventual disaster that cost over 2000 lives.”
The Albert Medal was the equivalent of the later George Medal and only around 500 people were ever awarded it.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact Richard on shipwreckdata@yahoo.co.uk
