An iconic establishment in Bridlington has closed its doors for good. The shop remained open after Ann Clough, the owner of Ernest Whiteley and Co, passed away on 5th November 2023, marking the end of an era for this cherished shop located on the Promenade.

Founded in 1901 by Ann’s grandfather, Ernest Whiteley and Co became a hallmark of ladies’ fashion in the town, renowned for its timeless charm and character.

The shop itself had an air of nostalgia, reminiscent of a bygone era, with its original art-deco façade and an interior that appeared virtually unchanged since its inception.

Floral patterns were a staple of the store’s offerings, and Ann was particularly skilled at creating stunning window displays that attracted passers-by.

Following her grandfather’s loss of sight in 1940, the reins of the business were passed to Ann’s mother, and Ann eventually took charge, working alongside Sue, a dedicated staff member who contributed to the shop’s success for three decades.

As a family-run venture, Ernest Whiteley provided a selection of traditional goods, featuring meticulously arranged window displays and an extensive array of haberdashery items. The shop’s arcade, adorned with striking Art Deco features, showcased Ann’s flair for design, with an assortment of covers and doilies displayed both inside and out.

While the future of this iconic establishment remains uncertain, there have been indications that various parties are interested in acquiring the property.
