Bridlington’s road name change leaves locals bemused.
A road in Bridlington has undergone a name change from Short Lane to Shorter Lane, causing much head scratching amongst locals.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council, has erected a shiny new sign that has left some residents not short of words:“I’ve lived here my whole life and this is just absolutely bonkers!” exclaimed one bewildered local. “It’s like they’ve taken a perfectly good road name and put it on a diet!”
The road in question is situated between Marton and Scarborough Road, near the Old Town and it seems to have been caught in the crossfire of confusion.
Ordnance Survey and Google Maps list the cut through as Short Lane, while another Short Lane is located two miles away on Bempton Lane. So is this a case of mistaken identity?
In a letter obtained by the Bridlington Echo, the East Riding of Yorkshire Council responded to the uproar:
“Thank you for your enquiry regarding the street name plate for Shorter Lane
“We can confirm that Shorter Lane is the street name currently recorded in our mapping system. We understand there may be some confusion, as there is also a Short Lane located off Bempton Lane. However, these are two distinct locations, and the signage for Shorter Lane reflects the name as officially registered.”
Residents have also taken to social media to voice their bemusement, suggesting that the council might have been inspired by a classic game of ‘guess the road name.’
“What’s next? Are they going to rename the Long Lane to Longest Lane?” one resident joked.
There is in fact a Long Lane located in Bridlington, which is around 50 metres away from Short Lane (or Shorter Lane according to ERYC).
On thing is for certain…Bridlington’s new Shorter Lane has certainly made a name for itself.
