Bridlington coastguard have renewed warnings about the dangers of tombstoning from sea walls in the resort.
A video shared on social media yesterday evening (30 June, 2025), shows a youngster getting into difficulties in the sea near to Bridlington Harbour.
He managed to scramble onto some steps leading up to the Esplande
Signs are in place along the sea walls prohibiting the practice of tombstoning, outlining the dangers of what lies underneath the water, plus the dangers of rough seas and currents.
Jordan Grebby, Station Officer at Bridlington Coastguard, said:
“We are aware of a recent video circulating on social media that shows a young boy getting into difficulty while tombstoning off Bridlington Harbour. Fortunately, he was able to exit the water safely before the situation became more serious.
This incident is a stark reminder of the very real dangers associated with tombstoning. Jumping from height into open water can result in serious injury or even death due to hidden underwater hazards, cold-water shock, and powerful currents.
If you see someone in trouble along the coast, call 999 immediately and ask for the Coastguard.”
