Tributes have been paid after the sad loss of Deputy Mayor and well-known local councillor Cllr Ray Pollard, who has sadly passed away. He was 79 and would have celebrated his 80th birthday this March.
Cllr Pollard was a familiar and much-loved figure in the community, known for his dedication to public service and his warm, approachable manner.
Alongside his work on the council, he previously worked at Ernest Brighams and F. Kneeshaws and also served the community as a civil celebrant, helping families mark life’s most important moments with dignity and care.
Originally from Bradford, Ray was also a qualified driving instructor, helping hundreds of learner drivers pass their tests.
Bridlington Mayor Cllr Angela Walker, paid tribute to Ray.:
“Ray was a lovely man and myself and my husband Graham are devastated at this sad news.
“We worked together on several projects within Bridlington Town Council and Ray stood in on civic engagements for me when I was otherwise booked.
“Our thoughts and condolences go out to his partner Doreen and his family.”
Away from civic life, Ray was a devoted supporter of Bridlington Town AFC. A passionate follower of the Seasiders for many years, he was also a member of the Bridlington Town Sporting Memories Group and rarely missed a chance to back the team.
Bridlington Town paid tribute to him on social media, saying:
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of our much-loved supporters, Ray Pollard, who sadly passed away in his sleep last night.
An incredible supporter of the club, he was with us only yesterday backing the team once again, and had even been making plans to travel with us to Tuesday night’s away game.
His support, commitment, presence, and passion for the Seasiders spanned so many years, and he will be greatly missed by everyone connected with the club.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.
Rest in Peace Ray.”
Friends, colleagues and residents across Bridlington have also begun sharing their memories, describing Cllr Pollard as kind, dedicated and deeply proud of his town.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements will be shared by the family when appropriate.
