Friends and family held a surprise birthday party for a special centenarian recently.
Edgar Styan had no idea he was to be the subject of a birthday surprise after his daughter took him to visit the Victoria Club in Flamborough.
As Edgar opened the door a huge cheer and rendition of Happy Birthday rang around the room.
It was all the more special for Edgar as he had been a committee member of the Victoria Club since 1984 and had visited on a daily basis for many years.
Edgar, who lives in Barmston, was born in Barnsley and worked in accountancy before he served in the Royal Engineers during World War 2, seeing active service in North Africa, Italy and Greece.
He was married to Margaret, who died in 2015, and they had two children – Margaret and Glenda, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Asked what was his recipe for reaching 100 years of age, Edgar replied: “The best advice I would give is to keep away from the doctor…..and I also enjoy the occasional drop of single malt whisky.”
Around sixty people attended Edgar’s party.
