On Monday, 13 July 2026, our Roads Policing Officers in conjunction with our Community Safety Mounted Volunteers, carried out Operation Close Pass on New Road in Nafferton.
This operation was undertaken following multiple reports from the Equestrian community in the area regarding drivers unsafely passing riders in the area.
Op Close Pass is a national operation aimed at educating drivers on the safe passage of vulnerable road uses such as horses and cyclists and aims to offer constructive guidance to drivers.
When passing a horse, the Highway Code advises a speed of no more than 10mph and at least a two-metre distance. Additionally, when passing cyclists, it is advised that you leave a gap of one and a half metres.
In total, 43 drivers were dealt with for speed, or passing too close to the horse and rider, however we are pleased to say that 24 drivers were also noted for their exceptional manner of driving and displaying care when overtaking the horses.
