Walkers have been advised to avoid an area along the King Charles Footpath on the East Yorkshire Heritage Coast after a landslip underneath part of the busy coastal path has left steps hanging over the cliff edge.
Steps at South Landing have been cordoned off with the advice to stay away and divert slightly inland after the path has become too dangerous for walkers.
The steps, which lead down to the Flamborough RNLI lifeboat station and are on the Bridlington side of the pathway, have been closed for several days after the recent heavy rains.
One local told the Echo: “Even though the steps are cordoned off most people follow the diversion – but some just ignore the closure and think it’s safe – and it isn’t.
“However some people like to play Russian Roulette with the erosion and I have also seen dogs that are not on a lead walking right on the cliff edge.”
A warning earlier this month issued by ERYC Coastal Services outlined the dangers of cliff erosion.
They stated:
“Following the heavy rain over the last few weeks, the cliffs are unstable and we have had a few significant cliff falls.
“Please stay away from the cliff bottom if you are walking along the beach.”
