A long-standing club is appealing for more players in an effort to avoid bringing an end to the game at one of England’s most scenic cricket grounds. Sewerby CC was formed in 1890 and has played at their stunning cliff-top ground in front of the Georgian grandeur of Sewerby Hall since 1952.

However, for a variety of reasons, they are struggling to field a team for the new season, which is due to get under way at the end of April with a derby encounter against Flamborough in the Yorkshire Premier League North.
“This is the worst I have known it in my 47 years at the club,” said secretary Vince O’Grady. “Whether you want to play every week or only occasionally, the club would be delighted to hear from you for an informal chat or to come and see for yourself at the weekly indoor nets on Wednesday evenings at Bridlington School sports hall.
“If other clubs or organisations would like to ground share or merge, then please also get in contact via email – vincentruthogradyv@btconnect.com (mailto:vincentruthogradyv@btconnect.com).
“We are also willing to chat with other clubs for any help with players via the loan system.”
The club is continuing to work closely with league officials and extended their thanks to Rob Richtering, Philip Robshaw, and Graham Hursthouse for their continued support in exploring all opportunities to keep this historic cricket club as part of the local sporting landscape.
An extraordinary general meeting will be held at the Ship Inn, Sewerby, on Sunday, April 13, at 7 pm. Anyone is welcome to attend.
Sewerby is also keen to re-start a junior section and is working with colleagues within the ECB to initiate setting this up – options include a junior team, ECB All-Stars, or Dynamos, suitable for boys and girls aged five to 11. Anyone interested in attending, coaching, or supporting the club in any way should get in touch.
