Members of Bridlington Bay Bowling Club have been ‘bowled’ over after raising thousands of pounds for a cancer charity.
Their fundraising total of £5,643 – raised since 2019 for children and young people with cancer – has been brought in by the club’s dedicated members.
In 2019 the bowling club, located in the grounds of Sewerby Hall, raised the funds from various events, including family fun days, for the charity Young Lives vs Cancer.
Very sadly, club member and driving force behind the fundraising efforts, Shirley Graves, passed away earlier this year and the fundraising total includes donations to Young Lives vs Cancer in loving memory of Shirley from her funeral collection.
Leo Graves, Shirley’s husband and Club Secretary, said: “I’m delighted to say our fundraising has been a massive success and I want to thank all the members at Bridlington Bay Bowling Club who have really got behind it and were so generous with their donations. I’m really proud to be a part of ‘Team Young Lives’ and support this fantastic charity.
“It’s so important that clubs like ours do our bit for Young Lives vs Cancer to make sure they can give families who are going through a terrible time all the support that they need. It feels great to be doing our bit to help this amazing charity reach those families.”
Last year in Yorkshire, Young Lives vs Cancer helped 631 families to find the strength to face everything cancer throws at them. They gave out 454 financial grants to the value of £91.300 helping families to cope with the costs of cancer. The Cancer Costs report from the charity found that families with a child on active treatment spend an extra £600 a month.
Jenny Dixon, Fundraising Engagement Manager for Yorkshire and North Derbyshire at Young Lives vs Cancer, “When cancer strikes young lives we help families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. We rely entirely on donations to fund our vital work and we can’t thank Bridlington Bay Bowling Club heroes enough for their fantastic efforts.
“The club have been so dedicated to their fundraising through all their fantastic events and the monies they have raised will make a massive difference for young people with cancer, by helping us ensure they are getting the right support they need.”
