Bridlington actor Charlie Heaton received a hero’s welcome on the world stage after being chosen as a guest of honour at the England v Argentina World Cup semi-final.
The Stranger Things star, best known for playing Jonathan Byers and who is also set to appear in the forthcoming Peaky Blinders film, walked onto the pitch just minutes before kick-off to carry the official match ball onto the field.
The Bridlington-born actor, who was raised in the town and now lives in the USA, was greeted by huge applause from tens of thousands of supporters, creating a proud moment for his hometown.

Charlie’s mum, Michelle Heaton, said:
“I’m so proud Charlie got asked to do that. What an honour and an amazing memory to have.”
Bridlington Gets Behind the Three Lions
Back in Bridlington, the excitement was just as intense, with pubs, clubs and community venues packed with supporters cheering on England on giant screens.
One of the biggest gatherings took place at the CYP on Gypsy Road, where hundreds of fans came together to support the Three Lions during the dramatic semi-final.

Bridlington Echo photographer Tom Fynn was there throughout the evening, capturing the emotion as supporters experienced every twist and turn of the match.
Although England were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Argentina, they bounced back in style to secure third place by defeating France 6-4 in a thrilling play-off.

For Bridlington, it was a night that will long be remembered—not only for England’s inspiring World Cup campaign, but also for seeing one of the town’s own proudly representing the resort on football’s biggest stage.
