A Bridlington resident has raised safety concerns after flooding in an exposed cellar at the site of the former Mermaid Pub on the West Hill estate.

The building was demolished several months ago, leaving the cellar area below ground level exposed. Following weeks of heavy rain, the space has filled with water, which in places is understood to be up to a metre deep.
Wire fencing has been installed around the site, but a local resident who contacted the Bridlington Echo says access underneath the barriers is still possible.
The resident, who asked not to be named, said the situation could pose a risk, particularly to young people.
“This is a disaster waiting to happen,” they said. “It is easy for youngsters to crawl underneath the fencing and even if they are only going in to collect a ball, they could fall down the rubble embankment and into the water. If they are not able to get out there could be a serious issue.”

It is currently unclear who owns the site or who erected the fencing.
The resident added they have contacted Bridlington MP Charlie Dewhirst and local councillors, hoping action will be taken to address the safety concerns.
