Review by Simon Kench
If you fancy a couple hours of fantastic festive fun by the seaside, then where better to spend your time than a trip to Bridlington Spa to see this year’s fun-filled pantomime.
Expect cheesy (and I mean cheesy) jokes, madcap winter madness, stunning costumes (hello Dame Dolly – you are a Diva), superb singing, a very scary giant and delightful dancing.
Jack and the Beanstalk hits the stage at a rapid sprint with a cast of familiar faces, lavish sets and costumes, and an innuendo laden script that is rather too funny.
The impressive line-up includes soap opera baddie Bill Ward as the superbly slimy Fleshcreep, effervescent Brid favourite – the ever youthful Troy Harris as Muddles – (he looks younger every year) and the world’s favourite Dame…Joe Standerline as Dolly Trott.
Also on board the Spa stage is Michael Garland who majestically plays the dotty King Cedric and the sweet Alexandra Lonsdale as the Princess, with the Spirit of Cloudland (Serena Walsh) keeping the narrative going with her crystal clear story telling.
Top singing stints from George Grant as Jack Trott, incredible dancing by the four ensemble cast (two of which are local ladies) Louise Blackburn and Molly Traves along with strong support from Jamie-Douglas-Turner and George Schmuck – again all ably supported throughout by the wonderful locally-based Collette Tyler dancers.
But every man’s favourite gal – Dame Dolly – really stole the show and our hearts. The one-liners (and fast costume changes), coupled with tongue-in-cheek fun is hard to fault. The costumes are as outrageous as some of the more ‘mature’ jokes and the laughter rolls in as fast at the North Sea in a storm 10 hurricane. Panto at Brid wouldn’t be the same without Yorkshire’s very own Joe Standerline.
Another classic Bridlington Spa panto with plenty for the kids and the parents too.
Well done to all concerned for cheering us all up and leaving us with silly smiles on our faces.
Jack and the Beanstalk.
