An NHS nursing sister and grandmother-of-eight, who treated the UK’s first Covid patients, is celebrating today after winning a share of £3.2 million.

The YO25 4 postcode sector was announced as the winner of People’s Postcode Lottery’s Postcode Millions prize on Saturday 30 July, with 792 people in the community picking up a cheque.

Fourteen neighbours playing with the full winning postcode – YO25 4RR in Kilham – took home £100,000 each.

A fifteenth winner doubled their money to £200,000 thanks to playing with two tickets.

The East Riding postcode area won the multi-million-pound lottery prize for the second time.

In June 2019, £3 million was shared between 338 residents when YO25 4 was announced as a winner.

The £100,000 winners include:

  • Sally Yearnshire (57) a grandmother-of-eight and an NHS nursing sister at Castle Hill Hospital has won, two years after treating the UK’s first coronavirus patients.
  • Stephen Artley (42) moved house but kept playing with his previous ‘lucky’ postcode after winning over £4k in 2019.
  • Elizabeth Kennedy (61) also won People’s Postcode Lottery back in 2019
  • Brenda Moore (77) a grandmother who moved to the postcode with her family in December

Sally Yearnshire won £100,000.

Sally Yearnshire said: “I can’t believe it. I didn’t dream as big as £100,000.

“You just don’t think it’ll be you and it’s happened twice.”

Sally’s husband Dougie said: “She really deserves it, she’s had a really tough couple of years working as a Sister on a Covid ward.”

Sally said: “It has been very hard over the last few years but I’m incredibly proud of my hard-working team who have been nominated for a Golden Hearts Award by the NHS Trust.

“After all that’s happened, this is just amazing. I’m going to buy a faster car for starters and buy a new sittee.

“I bought a hot tub after I won in 2019 and I’m going to treat my grandkids and my dogs Mollie and Dollie.”

Stephen and Kelly Artley are delighted with their win.

Stephen Artley said: “I can’t believe this is real.

“We won over £4,000 a few years ago. Although we’ve moved house since then, we kept playing with our old postcode as we thought it might be lucky, but we didn’t think it would be this lucky.

“We’re currently renovating our house and this will go a long way but we’ll also book a holiday.

“I’d love to go back to Australia because I lived there when I was younger.”

Stephen’s wife Kelly said: “You know when people say it’s life-changing, this is actually life-changing for us.

“I’m a student nurse and we only have one wage coming in, so this is absolutely amazing.”

Elizabeth Kennedy and her husband Stuart celebrate.

Elizabeth Kennedy said: “I can’t believe this has happened again!

“We won £4,254 in 2019 and kept playing because we liked supporting the charities, but we never thought we’d win again.

“Stuart and I have been married for 40 years this year, so this has been an exciting year already, this is just the icing on the cake.

“We’re just back from a holiday in Lanzarote but we’ll definitely take the family away and I’ve always wanted to visit New York City and Las Vegas.

“Lightening really can strike twice!”

Brenda Moore said: “Oh my giddy aunt!

“We only moved to this house in December, I can’t believe we’ve won, this is incredible.

“I think I’ll book a trip to Kenya with the family, and I might get a new car, but I really can’t imagine what having this amount of money will be like. I can even afford to get a cleaner now.

The YO25-4 district lies between Bridlington and Droffined and includes Kilham, Burton Agnes, Rudston and Nafferton as well as other villages.

“I signed up to play People’s Postcode Lottery because of all the great charities that are funded, I especially like that WaterAid is supported. I believe that everyone is entitled to good, clean, safe water, we’re very lucky in this country.

Other people picking up a £100,000 cheque included Liam Fraser (27) who intends to buy a house with the winnings.

The remaining ten winners opted to remain anonymous.

A win for the community

There were a further 777 winners in the YO25 4 postcode sector. Prize amounts for the other players in YO25 4 ranged from £1,779 to £7,116 depending on the number of tickets played with.

People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador Judie McCourt said: “It’s been absolutely fantastic meeting some of our winners today in East Riding. I loved seeing their reactions and I’m sure they’ll have a weekend of celebrations.

“A massive congratulations and I hope they enjoy spending the money.”

How it works

People’s Postcode Lottery costs £10 a month to play and there are guaranteed winners every day. People play with their chosen postcode and are automatically entered into all draws.

A minimum of 33% from each ticket goes to charity and players have raised more than £900 million for over 9,000 charities and good causes since 2005.

Local charities win too

Local good causes have also benefitted from player support. Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust is a small charity that supports people, landscape and wildlife across the Yorkshire Dales. The charity has received over £3.2 million in funding raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.;

Number of winners and prize amounts:

1 x £200,000 (2 tickets playing with full winning postcode YO25 4RP)

14 x £100,000 (1 ticket playing with full winning postcode)

1 x £7,116 (4 tickets)

15 x £5,337 (3 tickets)

88 x £3,558 (2 tickets)

673 x £1,779 (1 ticket)

This Postcode Millions draw was promoted on behalf of Postcode Children Trust which supports organisations including Girlguiding, Magic Breakfast and Whizz-Kidz.
